CDC El Centro
In addition to providing water wise “smart landscaping” design, part of the program was to create outdoor play areas for appropriate age groups and a splash pad with interactive water features. In an attempt to complement the stiff geometry of the building layout, the areas were designed as an organic curvilinear space. Reinforcing this concept, resilient surfacing and color concrete were designed to simulate a stream pattern that directs you toward the interactive water play area located at the center of the layout. A dry stream river rock bed in conjunction with grass groupings was brought into the play area to soften the fence and to create a true outdoor experience for the children. Multiple shade structures were strategically located to maximize afternoon shade protection.
