LAPD Metro

This renovation transforms the former LAPD Rampart Division Station into a proud new home for the elite LAPD Metropolitan Division

This renovation transforms the former LAPD Rampart Division Station into a proud new home for the elite LAPD Metropolitan Division. The scope included design of a neighborhood pocket park, a staff courtyard w/ permeable pavers, a patio rooftop garden, perimeter landscape treatment and bio-swale application for on-site runoff treatment.

The pocket park was an enormous opportunity for the neighborhood. It provides a naturalized gathering space for the community to use. Recycled building materials such as concrete steps were salvaged and incorporated within the design.Designed primarily as a passive park, it includes seating, security lighting, decomposed granite walks and colorful drought tolerant planting. The site layout of the staff courtyard adjacent to the building creates informal planting and paving zones. The space allows staff to organize outdoor gatherings and summer barbecue events. The paving includes porous concrete pavers between decorative linear pavers contributing to the site LEED credits for the project. The planting layout is architectural that enhances and complements the orthogonal site layout. The palette includes drought tolerant and low maintenance plant species. The patio rooftop garden includes fiberglass planters designed to variable heights. These provide enclosure, safety barrier from vehicles and an enhanced entry in to the space.

The design provides a fresh, accessible exterior image for the project. The courtyard spaces increase cross-platoon collaboration and staff amenities while enhancing the original building architecture. The pocket park has become a pride for the community. They prepared and have added permanent artwork in two locations within the courtyard spaces.
