Katella High School

Katella High School is a modernization project for the Anaheim Unified High School District.

Katella High School is a modernization project for the Anaheim Unified High School District. The campus is in a residential neighborhood with the northern edge fronting E. Wagner Avenue and locatedbetween S. Sunkist to the east and S. State College Boulevard to the west. The scope of work included an overall landscape master plan prepared to satisfy the requirements of the DROPS grant and to enhance functional relationships between the various courtyard spaces of the campus. The scope also included comprehensive landscape and irrigation redesign of the entire campus.

The DROPS grant (Drought Response Outreach Program) received from the Statespecifically required the lawn area along E. Wagner Ave to be replaced with low water use plants in response to the widespread drought conditions in the State. The grant also required the program to include an educational component within the modernization project. This spacewas thus re-designed as an exploratory botanical garden highlightingdistinct planting communities includingthe California desert, succulents, riparian and theCalifornia Mediterranean. The proposed plant palette and layoutdisplay evolution of the California landscapesover timebeginning from the historicalorchard groves to the urban community gardens. A dry stream bed is integrated within the overall design to complement the garden concept and provide water quality benefits for the site. Additional storm water storage areas are provided along the stream bed to facilitate infiltration and groundwater recharge.

The garden enhances the existing campus aesthetic and experience while providing an inviting/educational setting for students. Theprogram elements includean outdoor class-room, study rooms and shaded lunch areas. Besides providing fixed furniture to facilitate the outdoor classroom, the larger spaces within the garden are flexible enough to adapt to distinct student programs.
