Santa Ana River Trail

Santa Ana River Trail and located adjacent to the iconic ARTIC (Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center)

Along the Santa Ana River Trail and located adjacent to the iconic ARTIC (Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center) project, the scope included designing a plantable retaining wall along with signage kiosks and a walkway railing.

The inspiration for the design for the railing and kiosks come from the architecture of ARTIC portal. The railing displays the iconic beams of the building interior and visually relates to the dome shape of the structure. The educational kiosks are placed at the beginning and end of the pedestrian walk. They function as “pause” points for bikers and provide information about the history of the site and its surroundings. The design follows the column configuration of ARTIC’s pedestrian bridge structure with a circular sign connecting the columns together. The plantable wall supports a 10’ wide pedestrian walk on top located along the existing bike path.  This separation provides a safe walking and biking environment for both users. The planting palette includes colorful succulent planting designed to withstand the tough conditions of the site, need low maintenance and enhance the wall with striking curvilinear patterns.

The planting has now grown to cover a majority of the retaining wall. The planted wall along with the decorative railing add further interest to the ARTIC project while providing a visually pleasing context along this portion of the river trail. The signage is a timely addition to this stretch adding an educational component to the site
